Technology, or more specifically, social media, has changed our entire perception of communication and interaction. The question we must ask, however, is whether or not it has changed for the better or worse.

Any social media fanatic would be quick to argue that social media is an asset, if anything. People are more quickly updated on everything (from recipes to politics to what their cousin in Australia had for dinner). Others would argue that we are so immersed in keeping up to date with the society that we've looked past keeping in touch with the immediate world around us, especially with regard to family.

Long-distance communication is executed with an ease that would have been completely unheard of in pre-technological times. Hence the growing development of long-distance relationships. In the past, all a person in the said relationship had to hold onto were letters and letters of eloquent words and the occasional black-and-white photograph; these days, a lot more pictures are exchanged- yet somehow less valuable than the colourless treasures of the past. There is a lot more potential for words, yet we often fall short in that department.

It has become so much easier to respond positively to a post online than to say a few kind words in person. The interaction rate has grown, yes- but communication has burned down to an ember, for there is an inherent difference between the two. Technology has its advantages and pitfalls, I think it is our duty to balance the two.
