3 JAN Essay

Q: Nowadays, many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

At the onset of the Information Age, a major shift in working habits can be clearly witnessed across the world. Against the backdrop of this, more and more people – in running days – are going to prefer their own work on rendering their services in different organizations. While discussing the demerits of this development, let us outline why this is the case.

There are three fundamental reasons why a larger segment of the workforce is deviating from conventional ways of employment and paving their path towards self-work: seeking more rewards, enjoying independence, and gaining more opportunities. The foremost is monetary benefits. Without any iota of doubt, in business or even in a sole proprietorship, the chances of making more money beef up manyfold more than doing jobs in different companies. Moreover, making decisions and steering towards prosperity is again more rewarding in terms of self-sufficiency and work satisfaction. And, this freedom of work opens a new horizon for individuals to showcase their abilities in society.

The downside to this, when it comes to learning of gaining work knowledge, multinational companies and big setups allow their worker to outperform in a more disciplined way. They learn from the activities of their peers, and cutthroat competition pushes them more to become more productive. However, self-employment renders slim opportunities in this regard.

In the culmination of the above discussion, we may assert that self-work, despite some limitations, allows people to flourish more because they reap more rewards, enjoy contentment in their work and have flexible hours. It can be foreseen that in the nearest future, more and more people will work independently and join companies only to gain knowledge, and not to rely permanently on them.
