Above all else, communication is paramount- between individuals and between countries. It is, without a question, most convenient if people are able to communicate with ease. A universal language for the purpose of easy communication is hardly an unnecessary luxury but an imperative countermeasure to miscommunication and further educating ourselves on the world and the people we share it with.

An alternative that can be considered for people who are opposed to the spread of a single language eradicating many others, would be to create translation techniques, such as digital apps, that would help people of different language backgrounds to communicate in their languages yet perfectly able to understand each other without having to resort to learning English. Basically high-tech automated dictionaries.

Arguably, the use of one universal language for basic communication purposes is, undoubtedly, the most convenient of all option. However, it cannot be disputed that more and more people drift away from their own mother tongue- and that is no inconsequential matter. Entire eras, dynasties and histories are carried in languages. No respect or attention is paid to languages far more complex and beautiful than English, and even less to its people. For instance, Urdu poetry is given far less attention despite being quite superior, in a few aspects, to English poetry.

In my opinion, a universal language should not entirely be discouraged, but instead, multilingualism should be strongly encouraged instead.
