In this context, many believe that the harmful effects of social media on interpersonal communication are evident, whereas others think that it is a valuable source for learning how to interact with others. In my view, the former argument is more convincing.
There are two fundamental reasons why social media has a negative impact on communication skills: non-physical interaction and the spread of false messages on the internet. The foremost factor supporting this viewpoint is the extensive use of texting and other online modes of communication. In fact, these are non-traditional ways of delivering messages, and as a result, speakers can hardly gain confidence or use gestures to interpret and convey implicit information. For instance, it is often observed that social media leads to frequent argumentative discussions in which, most of the time, both parties misunderstand each other’s opinions.
The second plausible explanation for weak interpersonal communication skills is the propagation of false information. Generally speaking, internet users often hide their identities, even their gender, due to privacy concerns. For this reason, a discussion may begin with a lie and end with a lie. Consequently, any relationship or bond formed through social media may suffer from trust issues. In contrast, face-to-face interaction is far more effective and productive for both listeners and speakers. Ultimately, learning communication skills through artificial means can hardly be compared with the learning acquired through natural interaction.
Conversely, opponents rightly argue that social media provides new opportunities for interaction. They support their argument by stating that the internet, often referred to as a global village, opens new avenues for people from all walks of life. According to this perspective, in the modern age, anyone who wishes to establish new relationships while improving speaking skills can do so through online platforms.
In conclusion, it can be asserted that the limitations of social media outweigh its benefits when it comes to interpersonal communication. This is primarily due to privacy concerns and the unnatural mode of conversation it promotes.
